Private
labels are to clothes what store brands are to groceries.
Many
chains sell their own trademarks. For example, JC Penny's has its "Arizona" label and
Kmart its "Jaclyn Smith" line.
Like
store-brand groceries, private-label clothes are often made by famous national
manufacturers. And like store-brand groceries, you will pay a lot less for private-label
clothing. The reasons for the low price are the also the same: you don't pay for
advertising, shelf space, product development, promotions and middle men. You are buying
direct from the dealer.

STORES STAND BEHIND THEIR PRIVATE LABELS
When
a store's name is on the clothing, they want it to be good quality. Generally you'll get a
money-back guarantee.
When
you know how to buy private label clothes, you can save up to 70% over the regular private
label price.
The
secret is knowing the markup on private-label clothing; it is typically sold at 2.5 to 5 times its wholesale price. This means that you should ignore sales of only 20%-30% off and wait for sales of 50%-70% off. The store can still make a profit at these prices. See end notes in Chapter 17.
Many
chains plan on selling half to two-thirds of their private label clothes on sale. So be
patient and wait until the price is right.
Get
to know which brands are the store's private label. Try them on, find out which ones you
like, and then wait for a sale.

You
simply will not get the same kind of discounts on famous brand names that you will on
private labels for the simple reason these clothes are not marked up as much. The very
best discount is usually a 20%-30% off sale. Of course, if you can find it as a clearance
or closeout item, you will do much better.
