15.0 FREE AND LOW COST GOVERNMENT SERVICES
==Average
Discount = $150
Many
people assume that government services are only for the disadvantaged or that assistance
is not available. It is well worth your while to find out what free assistance is
available before spending a lot of money.
For
example, in our area the local sheriff'S department hands out a free well written booklet
entitled "Guide to Security." In this you will find dozens of useful tips to avoid being
robbed or burglarized. I would get this book, read it and implement suggestions before
investing in an expensive home security system.

COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT SERVICE
One
of the best deals in health care is your local county health department. Professionals
there may have more time to spend with you than a doctor. Services may include: a very
thorough physical, various vaccinations especially for children, prenatal care, maternal
and child health, tests for cholesterol and glucose, flu shots, and pap smears.
I
got perhaps the best and most thorough physical exam with lots of time to ask questions of
a health care professional for about $40 at the country health department.
15.0.2
POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT ASSISTANCE
Participate
in the free "operation identification" program that your police department may offer. They
may let you use an engraving tool to mark valuables as well as give you pointers on
securing your home. Do this before considering an expensive home security unit.
Check
out your local fire department: many departments offer a free fire inspection.
15.0.3
YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY
Very
expensive investment directories and newsletters may be available, as well as computers
with Internet access, videos and CDs you can check out, and the latest
magazines.
If
you have a free e-mail account that is online (such as Yahoo), you may be able to check it
for free at the local library. However, remember to check most free accounts at least once
a month or you may find that it has been canceled.
