BUY MORE STORE BRANDS AT THE SUPERMARKET AND DISCOUNT STORES We have mentioned this many times, but the easy way to spend much less money per week without spending more time and effort is to buy store brands. As ABC-TV pointed out on their 20/20 program that aired April 22, 2005 most people cannot tell the difference between store brands and national brands. The savings are dramatic, about $1000 a year and more which will easily pay for the increase in the price of gas. REDUCE LONG DISTANCE AND CELL PHONE EXPENSES Take a good look at your phone bill. There are often a number of extra expenses that you may not understand. If you are spending more than $15 for long distance you should really look into other options. If your cell phone bill is always higher than your monthly minimum costs, you should check into ways to cut those extra expenses. In particular look at the in-state calling costs, local toll calls, extra charges, surcharges, connection fees and taxes on your bill. While many long distance carriers offer an inexpensive per minute rate such as 5 cents/minute, this rate usually applies to state-to-state calls. In-state calls, where most calls are made, are often much more expensive. In addition many charge a monthly fee or a minimum.
