#1. BEST MOVIES FOR TV VIEWING

There's nothing like curling up on the couch with a good movie
in the cold winter months. But why pay for expensive videos or
premium pay channels? The inexpensive Turner Classic Movies
(TCM) may be the finest movie channel ever put together. If
that sounds like an overstatement, read on.

For many cable subscribers TCM is included with expanded cable.
If you need to extra pay, the cost is usually nominal. The
films are uncut and commercial free.

Not only does TCM have a huge collection, but movies are shown
at regular times each week or altogether in a series so that
you can video tape and create your own film library. You will
encounter some very unusual movies here that cannot be found
anywhere else such as silents. The scheduling is straight
forward and logical. You can also look it up on the web.

In conjunction with the excellent Internet site, you can find
listings for a variety of categories including: Adventure,
Biography, Comedy, Crime, Documentary, Drama, Epic, Foreign,
Horror, Musical,  Mystery, Romance, Science Fiction, Silent,
Sports, Suspense, War and Western. Actors, directors and
special films are featured each month.

There is another very important reason why older movies are
your best bet for TV viewing. To put it bluntly newer movies
look terrible on TV and old ones look great. The width to
height relationship for old movies (technically known as the
aspect ratio) is almost the same as the TV aspect ratio so you
see movies as they were intended to be seen. However, the newer
wide screen format can lose 50% or more when shown full screen
on the tube because you will see a truncated and distorted
version which has usually been edited for TV.

#2. VIDEO TAPING TIPS

With video tapes now running about $1 per tape, creating your
own library is simple and cheap. After years of taping movies
from cable, I recommend you buy the 8 hour variety instead of
the 6 hour. You will find that you waste less tape with the
more flexible 8 hour length and that you have fewer tapes you
have to sort though.

I have also found there is virtually no difference between
expensive tapes and cheap ones, so buy the least expensive. And
I can find little difference between the quality of the
recording speeds, so I recommend you record at the slowest
speed (SLP) which will give you the longest recording time.

If you really want to enhance your film library, video tape the
"Essentials" series on Turner Classic Movies (see earlier
article) which is a screening of some of the best movies of all
time, shown at 6 PM every Sunday night.

#3. COUGH MEDICINE FOUND USELESS

A recent British review of 15 studies of over-the-counter cough
medicine, found that there was no difference between expensive
medicine and a placebo. Dr. Knut Schroeder who was involved
with the study said, "There's very little evidence for or
against the effectiveness of these medicines."

Bottom line: It does not hurt to take these but it does not
help either.

We recommend: If you like cough medicine, buy the generic brand
that has ingredients which match your favorite name brand. We
believe there will be virtually no difference and you will save
as much as 50%. Or try a home-made formula listed in the next
section of this newsletter.

#4. MY MOTHER'S HOME-MADE COUGH MEDICINE

A basic home-made cough medicine often works much better than
an expensive over-the-counter drug.

Recipe:
1 teaspoon whiskey
1 teaspoon honey
1/2 teaspoon lemon

NOTE: If you think whiskey is a bad idea, look at the
ingredients in a night-time cold medicine; it is often 25%
alcohol.

I have found this recipe is the only medicine that will stop a
cough in the middle of the night and let me get some sleep.
