#1. CHECK FRAUD MUCH LARGER THAN CREDIT CARD FRAUD

In January the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that
identity theft was the #1 fraud complaint in 2001. However, many
articles did not mention that the most common form of fraud
involved bank checks to the tune of 19 billion dollars vs. 1.3
billion for Visa/MasterCard fraud.

And the news gets worse. Most people assume the bank that issued
the check will cover the loss but the recently changed laws that
concern commercial transactions of this kind (UCC) assign blame
depending on the circumstances.

To prevent check fraud reconcile your checkbook with your bank
statement soon after your monthly statement arrives. Never give
out your social security number, bank account number, name,
address and even your phone number unless absolutely necessary.

#2. NEWSPAPER KINDLING

I learned this trick when I was a child. With enough of this
starter kindling you can even get big logs to catch fire.

Take two large flat pages of newspaper, roll them into a tube
with about a one inch hole in the middle, then bend the rolled
paper to make a simple knot (it should look like a large
pretzel). Make dozens. A pile of these set on fire with some
wadded-up newspaper can be used in place of kindling to start a
fire in the fire place or to ignite charcoal in a grill. They
will burn for ten to fifteen minutes and create a very hot flame.

#4. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Savvy-Discounts,

A tip related to oil heat. If you are very low on oil, use the
emergency switch to turn off the burner before the delivery
comes, and keep it off for an hour. This will prevent the rush of
new oil stirring up sludge and grit that settles on the bottom of
a tank and can clog the burner and shut things down.

Another money-saving tip: If you can't afford storm windows, it's
just as efficient to tape clear plastic over windows, either on
the outside or inside. The idea is to create a dead-air gap
between the glass and plastic.

Hardware stores sell clear plastic for the purpose (those
packaged plastic storm windows are too expensive, I think), but
any kind of plastic that is not too thin will work.
