#1. IS BEING OVERWEIGHT ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT?

Think being overweight is all your fault? Guess again.

The lead story in the Life Section of USA Today, Feb. 19, 2002,
highlighted a new book entitled "Food Politics: How the Food
Industry Influences Nutrition and Health," by Marion Nestle,
(University of California Press, $29.95).

The author points out that the $900 billion food industry is
making their product more tempting, more available and super
sizing it. They are also targeting vulnerable groups such as
children. The result is that citizens are dangerously
overweight.

Just think about all those mouth watering ads on TV. In the face
of relentless and unavoidable marketing (we all have to eat),
what can be done?

Here are three easy ideas for losing weight, staying fit, saving
money and taking control without any extra effort. (And they
said it couldn't be done.)

______A. EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST

Although there is a very disturbing and growing trend to skip
breakfast, numerous studies show that you and your children will
have more energy, better concentration and lower cholesterol
when you eat something first thing in the day. You will also be
able to control your body weight better because missing this
meal only makes you hungry and grouchy. Any kind of breakfast is
good for you even leftover pizza or pasta. I know that sounds
weird, but some food is better than none in the morning.

If you are really in a rush, try this fast, cheap, no fat,
almost no cooking, breakfast:
---One large banana
---A large glass of orange juice (I like the juice with pulp
which is called "country style" and is quite filling)
---A cup of tea (put a tea bag in a cup with water and zap in
the microwave for a few minutes)
Preparation time = 60 seconds: peel the banana, pour the juice,
and nuke the tea
Of course, a bigger breakfast is better, but this one is quick,
easy and simple to shop for and keep on hand.

______B. DON'T BE AFRAID OF *SHARING*
         -- LOSE WEIGHT & SAVE MONEY

According to the book, "Food Politics," the increase our weight
correlates closely with the increase in portion size at
eateries, prepared packaged foods and those super-size orders at
fast food restaurants.

We have recommended for years, that people *SHARE* large
portions, if a big size is all that is being sold. You'll save
50% as well.

Split a lunch or dinner at a restaurant (believe me the waiter
really won't mind). At a fast food establishment super size one
order but not the other and split those large fries.

Two years ago during a radio interview, the host of the show in
Raleigh, NC accused me of being "cheap" because I recommended
people share large plates at restaurants. I replied that he must
not have a weight problem.

Do not be shy about sharing. It is your money and your body.
Don't let the food businesses force you to eat more than you
need or want. Take control.

______C. MINI-EXERCISE

There are lots of ways to get little bits of exercise during the
day. While this is not a substitute for a regular exercise
program, breaking up your day with mini-exercises will keep you
more alert, burn off some calories, cost you nothing and help
you avoid "repetitive motion" problems.

For example, a major company in a high-rise in Durham, North
Carolina, decided to make the drab staircase an inviting place
to walk. Now some people go up and down the stairs instead of
taking the elevator. Park further away from the mall and walk a
little. Go for a five minute stroll near your home or job twice
a day or just amble down the hallway a couple of times.

Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine, copy
both sides of each license, credit card, etc. If your wallet is
lost or stolen, you will know exactly what you had. You will
have all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and
cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.

If you have a problem, here's what you should do. Cancel your
credit cards immediately. File a police report immediately in
the jurisdiction where the wallet was stolen. This proves to
credit providers you were diligent and is a first step toward an
investigation. Also call the three national credit reporting
organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name
and SS#. The alert means any company that checks your credit
knows your information was stolen and they have to contact you
by phone to authorize new credit.
