DOLLAR STORES Some Of The Very Best Deals While large department stores such as Wal-Mart and Kmart have good prices, I have found some of the best deals recently at Dollar Stores. In our not very metropolitan area, I have located three such stores. If you need items like batteries, socks, party goods, you can stock up. Two stores only sell items for a dollar, while another store sells things from $1 to about $5. In some stores the inventory seems to change often so check these places regularly and don't expect the same precise items (e.g. same brand of socks) to be there every time. I suggest that when you first visit a dollar store, you take your time and go down each of the isles to familiarize yourself with what they stock. Being a dollar store they are going to carry a limited number of goods, but you will be pleasantly surprised at what you can find. SOME OF MY BEST FINDS: PART I Panasonic batteries: These are the best batteries I have found at any price. At one dollar store 4 AA alkaline batteries sell for $1.50. Batteries similar to these can sell for as much as $5.95 at other stores. You can also find good prices on AAA and other batteries. Sylvania fluorescent lights: The 11 watt fluorescent light gives out as much light as a 40 watt light bulb. Also since the fluorescent lights last 2-3 times as long, the $1 price means that the initial cost is not that much more than a regular bulb. And lasting longer means that you will have to replace these less often. I estimate that the energy savings from each 11 watt light equals about $1 a month. So if you replace 20 bulbs you would be saving about $20 a month. Reading Glasses: At the Dollar Tree where I live, reading glasses are $1 each. I buy a number of pairs for extras. I have been using one pair now for over a year and they seem to be as good as drug store glasses that can cost up to $15. #3. SOME OF MY BEST FINDS: PART II Christmas and Party Supplies: The most important thing about party decorations is that they be festive, not that they cost a lot. You will find a very good selection at many of these stores. And no one will know how much you paid. Christmas Presents and Favors: For inexpensive small presents, the dollar stores are a gold mine. You will find things such as calendars, candles, candlesticks, incense, decorative boxes, sturdy colorful bags, toys, and more. Kitchen Gadgets: The number of kitchen utensils, holders, corkscrews, racks, and even pots and pans is astounding. Before paying a high price at any other store check out a dollar store. Storage Containers: Plastic storage containers of all sizes are often found at these stores.
