#1. CUTTING BACK ON SMALL REGULAR EXPENSES A good way to save a lot of money. Recently I cut back on a number of small charges that added up to $33 a month. While it seems time consuming and not really worth the trouble, the savings are substantial. It usually takes about half an hour to find the paper work and call the company. But the real pay off is that you will save month after month. I believe that a periodic financial "house cleaning" of small expenses pays you the equivalent of $50-$100 an hour. #1. #2. REMOVING LONG DISTANCE MONTHLY FEE Why pay for something I do not use? I noticed that my long distance company that I never use (because I use the prepaid Tel3Advantage long distance) started charging me $6 a month minimum fee. It took a good half hour to cancel the service. Because of all the problems with slamming, my local phone company was extra careful to make sure that I really wanted to make the change. While I could have designated no long distance company, it was actually cheaper (about $2 a month cheaper) to have a long distance carrier that would charge me nothing unless I made an occasional call. The reason having no long distance company cost more is because there is a charge for the ability to make 800 calls. Unfortunately I had to deal with a lot of misinformation which took another twenty minutes to sort out. When I asked how much a long distance call would be, I was told that it could be as much as $4 a minute because I had not selected a plan with my carrier. Since this did not make any sense to me, I insisted that the salesperson verify this with a supervisor. Of course, it was not true. A call would cost me as much as 40 cents a minute during prime time but not $4. Since I will never use this long distance service except in a dire emergency, I did not mind this quite high per minute charge. #3. BANK AND CABLE SAVINGS It just took a bit of asking A call to my bank yielded more savings. I was using a plan that was costing me $15 a month. After some discussion, the telephone assistant at the bank recommended an alternative. By switching to a slightly different plan which required that I do all transactions via the ATM machine and that I make at least one direct deposit a month, I reduced the charges to my account to nothing. Also as I mentioned a while back, I was able to get my cable bill dropped from $70 to $58 a month with no change in service. This took about half an hour on the phone. I was determined to reduce the cost in some manner either by removing features, switching to satellite, or moving to a minimal cable service. Finally the company volunteered a "special offer" that reduced my cost for 18 months with no change in service.
