== Set of long battery jumper cables

These are essential - no car should ever leave home without a good set; learn the right and safe way to jump a battery. (We'll cover this in another issue).

== Adjustable wrench

Keep a large size in the car as a complement to the smaller one you keep at home.

== Tire pressure gauge

A good gauge will save you $100s of dollars over the years by allowing you to inflate your tires properly. Learn how to measure properly by putting the gauge squarely on the valve stem so that you get a consistent reading each time

== Tire tools

Periodically check your bumper jack, lug wrench and spare

NOTE: Harry points out that new cars use torx fasteners, so you might want a set of torx drivers. He has found that many newer cars use one size torx fasteners and one size metric bolt. Armed with just the right sized torx driver and socket wrench you might be able to do simple work such as change a headlight.
