SARS is a new disease which is spreading around the world and can be quite deadly. As of April 15, 2003, 3235 cases had been reported worldwide with 193 cases in the US. Those cases in the US also involved the local transmission of the disease. It appears that the very young and very old are most at risk.

The television news reports that I have watched have been helpful in alerting people to the danger, but most have been short on details about symptoms and prevention.

#3. SARS PREVENTION: HAND WASHING
Simple and effective

As we have pointed out, prevention is often cheap and simple. As with the flu and other communicable diseases, hand washing with soap (it does not need to be antibiotic) is quite effective. It helps in two ways: you are less likely to get the disease and less likely to spread infection from yourself or others.

Wash for about 30 seconds in warm water and dry on a clean towel or hot air dryer. Do this about five times a day. With children you might recommend that they wash while singing the alphabet one time slow or two times fast.

#4. SARS PREVENTION: DISINFECTION
Cheap and easy

To quote the CDC "Common household cleaners are sufficient for disinfecting toilets, sinks, and other surfaces touched by patients with SARS, but the cleaners must be used frequently."

To kill germs on surfaces, chlorine bleach is cheap and very effective. In a study at the University of Arizona bleach cleaning could eliminate up to 99.9% of germs. Bleach will kill bacteria such as Salmonella, staphyloccus, and E. coli and viruses such as those of the common cold, flu or chicken pox. It is so widely used that I found a health care site with specific instructions on making a .5% solution of chlorine for disinfection.

Know what to look for

According to the CDC:
"If you are ill with a fever greater than 100.4°F (>38.0°C) that is accompanied by a cough or difficulty breathing or that progresses to a cough and/or difficulty breathing, you should consult a health care provider."
