#1. PREVENT COLDS AND FLU
Does simple and cheap
hand washing really do any good?

It turns out that your mom was right. Hand washing is a low cost and simple way to prevent a myriad of contagious illnesses. Wash your hands four or more times a day with plenty of soap and warm water for about 20 seconds and then dry.

Antibiotic soap is not necessary and may not even be a good idea, but we'll save that for another article. Take a look at what health experts have to say:

The Navy Wire Service - B Wire (NWSB) reported on July 21 1997: "Washing your hands keeps you healthy. Children who washed their hands four or more times during the school day had 24 percent fewer sick days because of colds and flu, and 50 percent fewer sick days because of stomach troubles."

In another study the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego found that new recruits at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, IL, who washed their hands at least five times a day had 45 percent fewer illnesses such as a cold, flu or pneumonia than those who didn't wash their hands as much.

#2. BEWARE OF FAULTY LATE CHARGES
ON YOUR CREDIT CARD STATEMENT

Check your credit card statements carefully. Some credit card companies are now getting half of their income from extra fees such as late fees. They actually want you to pay late so that they can sock you with a big penalty. Don't let them do this to you.

Last November I mailed two bills on the same day. One took two days to arrive and be credited, the other took nine days and arrived past the due date causing a late charge.

A quick call to the card company resulted in a credit of about $30. Usually a phone call within a few days of receiving your statement will get this type of charge removed. It works best if you can back up your claim that you mailed in on time.

However, it is very important that you correct this immediately, not only because it will save you a late fee. A late payment can trigger substantially higher interest rates on your account and may be reflected on your credit record.

#3. ICICLES AND HOT SPOTS:
WINTER IS A GREAT TIME TO INSPECT YOUR INSULATION

Those beautiful icicles dripping down from your roof are often a sign that some insulation is missing. Heat from your house is melting snow on your roof, water is running down and then freezing as icicles. Also look for areas on your roof that clear more quickly than the rest. Recent studies have shown that many contractors who install insulation often miss the edges of attics and other odd places.

Next go up into your attic and check. Just a few gaps here and there can result in heat pouring out of home so that you are paying through the roof.

Filling gaps in insulation may be one of the most cost effective improvements you can make. This is because you are only plugging gaps in your insulation barriers. The price is very small and it may even pay for itself in the first winter. In addition your home will feel more comfortable and less drafty.

#4. MY MOTHER'S HOME-MADE COUGH MEDICINE
Simple and cheap

A basic home-made cough medicine often works much better than an expensive over-the-counter drug.

Recipe:
1 teaspoon whiskey
1 teaspoon honey
1/2 teaspoon lemon

NOTE: If you think whiskey is a bad idea, look at the ingredients in a night-time cold medicine; it is often 25% alcohol.

I have found this recipe is the only medicine that will stop a cough in the middle of the night and let me get some sleep.
