#2. DRAMATIC RISE IN PREMIUMS

After years of cost savings, the price of insurance for health
care, managed care and HMO's is set to rise dramatically. Double
digit increases (12%-15%) will be common with premiums in some
programs going as high as 40%.

While employers may pay much of this, many will pass along the
rising costs in the form of higher premiums, higher co-payments
and lower benefits. Some employers may even get rid of co-
payments in favor of a set percentage that employees must pay.

The outlook for the future is not good either. Double digit
increases are expected for the next couple of years. While we at

insurance, there are a number of ways to lower costs without
sacrificing quality.

#3. FOUR STRATEGIES FOR REDUCING THE PRICE YOU MUST PAY

A.)...Make your deductible as high as possible.
We believe you will save a lot of money by raising the
deductible to $500 or $1000 or even $2000 and putting the money
you saved into a savings account. When you have an expense that
is not covered, take money from that account. Over time you
should save a bundle.
There is even a government plan that allows you to take
advantage of this kind of strategy. It is called a Medical
Savings Account. You put pretax dollars into a special account
for medical bills. Any money you save accumulates tax free like
an IRA.

B.)...Always file and get a reply from your insurance company
before paying any out-of-pocket doctor or hospital expenses.
If you must pay for a medical procedure yourself, do not write a
check to your doctor until you have received a reply from your
insurance company. The reason is simple: doctors often have an
agreements with these companies that limit the price of various
services. You are only obligated to pay the discounted price
that the insurance company negotiated with your doctor.
C.)...Use different medical services.
===Walk-in, no appointment "doctor-in-a-box" offices are often
quick and inexpensive for things like flu shots or minor
emergencies. Most will file insurance claims for you.
===County or city medical centers can be a good source for
immunization shots. Both my wife and I got a physical exam at
our local center and received a thorough exam at a very
reasonable cost. Many people think that local government health
centers are for the poor but they are for everyone.
===Also consider seeing a nurse practitioner (NP) who is a nurse
with advanced training. Many are now setting up primary care
practices. A recent study, reported in the Wall Street Journal,
found that this health care service was equal to those of
doctors and often cost less. Make sure that your insurance will
cover an NP's care.

#4. FREE NOTE TAKING AND CALENDAR SOFTWARE

TreePad Lite is a totally free and very useful program. I have
been using it for years. It allows you to take notes and arrange
them in a tree-like structure. This lets you hide or display
information as needed.

It works extremely well for personal calendars and note taking.
Use it for phone numbers, birthday reminders, shopping lists,
drafts of e-mails and a lot more. I use it to write notes for
this newsletter. You can easily search for information, a great
benefit when you can't remember where you wrote something down.
You can also print, copy or export text into other programs such
as word processors or e-mail programs. You will find this year's

#5. INTERVIEW WITH EDITOR RICK DOBLE ON TV

The NBC-TV owned affiliate WTVJ in Miami has completed an
interview with Editor Rick Doble of SAVVY-DISCOUNTS.com
newsletter about strategies for cutting the cost of clothing. In
the interview, Rick showed how his wife had paid about $10 total
for $100s of  designer clothing, including a Brooks Brothers
shirt and an Eddie Bauer premium down vest. (We will go into
just how she did this in a future newsletter.) This interview
may be aired on other NBC stations around the country in the
month of May so keep an eye out for it.
