#1. CELEBRATE EARTH DAY
SAVE MONEY, TIME, SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE
    AND HELP THE ENVIRONMENT

It's been 30 years since the first one and now we are
celebrating another Earth Day. It will take place on Monday,
April 22, 2002.

There is a myth that helping the environment takes more time,
costs more money and adds more chores to our already busy lives.
The truth is that if you use resources wisely and efficiently,
you will save lots of cash and make your life easier. We have
included two tips that show exactly how to do this. In addition
you may want to read our full list of 16 ways to save money and
help the environment at our web site:
http://www.SAVVY-DISCOUNTS.com/r_16XSaveMoney+Environment.htm

#2. THROW AWAY LESS FOOD
    SAVINGS = ABOUT $500/YEAR.

According to the EPA food scraps equal 7.4% or 13.2 million tons
of trash in our landfills each year.

The 1995 study by the Economic Research Service found that
Americans waste over 25% of the food they buy, which adds up to
approximately $1000 per year per household. Some waste is
inevitable. Food that is old or questionable should be
discarded. So we estimate that each household should be able to
cut waste by about half or $500 a year.

Reducing food waste helps the environment because less will be
going into landfills and sewage systems. In addition you will
save a lot of time because you won't be shopping as much and
you'll spend less time in food preparation and clean up. Here
are some of our best tips.

A)...Have a food storage system.
Own two or three different sized refrigerator containers for
storing leftovers. Buy the same brand for each size so that lids
and bottoms are interchangeable since sooner or later you will
lose one of these. Don't buy round, bowl shaped or odd sized
containers, instead buy square or rectangular ones which use
refrigerator space more efficiently. The best containers can be
put in the freezer or refrigerator and then microwaved.
Attractive ones (such as glass) can even be used as serving
dishes which means you'll have fewer dirty dishes.
B)...Don't let food sit.
After a meal store it immediately so it doesn't spoil. Have a
method for marking the date on the container. We've found
sticking a little duck tape on the lid and writing with an
indelible marker works well for both the refrigerator or
freezer. The duck tape stays on but can be removed easily. Take
the duct tape off before putting the container into a microwave
or dish washer.
C)...Plan meals with leftovers in mind.
Many dishes taste better on the second day: stews, soups, even
lasagna may be improved on day 2.
D)...Know how long each food is good for.
Look at this detailed list of storage requirements from the Food
Marketing Institute for just about all foods:
http://www.fmi.org/consumer/foodkeeper/search.htm
You will also find many food storage and handling tips.

-------------========| Cut the Soap |========-------------

#3. USE HALF AS MUCH SOAP
    SAVINGS = ABOUT $50/YEAR

Soap is very bad for the environment. Less is better. And if you
don't use as much, you won't shop as often plus you'll save
money.

While advertisements always show lots of suds or a full blob of
tooth paste on top of a brush, the truth is you may only need to
use half as much as the manufacturer recommends.

A)...Avoid suds.
Lots of suds is a sign that you are using too much soap. Try
washing the dishes and laundry with less. When brushing your
teeth or shaving experiment with using as little as possible.
B)...Special shampoo tip:
Washing twice uses less soap and actually cleans better. Wash
your hair once with just a smidgen of shampoo. Rinse it out and
then wash it again with another smidgen. After the second round
you will find that your hair is squeaky clean.

-------------========| Savings Calendar |========-------------

#4. SAVINGS CALENDAR:
COUNT ON THESE SAVINGS IN THE UP-COMING MONTH OF MAY

Look for sales on: furniture, gardening supplies, luggage,
mattresses, refrigerators, stereos-TVs-VCRs, tires, washers &
driers.

Clothing sales: late spring clothes; also look for annual sales
on new summer clothes. May is a good time to travel. The weather
is warm but the rates are still off season.

NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many
people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really
fresh. Buying in season means that these items are often
cheaper, fresher and that money may be going to local farmers.

Fruits and vegetables: asparagus, bananas, beets, bermuda
onions, blueberries, cabbage, cantaloupe, celery, corn,
cucumbers, grapefruit, green or wax beans, green onions, lemons,
lettuce, nectarines, oranges, peas, pineapples, plums,
raspberries, radishes, rhubarb, strawberries, spinach, squash,
watercress.

-------------========| Follow Up Notes |========-------------

#5. FOLLOW UP NOTES RELATING TO TOPICS IN PAST ISSUES:

A)...In "The Surgeon General's Call To Action To Prevent and
Decrease Overweight and Obesity" you will find the following
point:
"Encourage the food industry to provide reasonable food and
beverage portion sizes."

At SAVVY-DISCOUNTS.com we believe that portion size is a major
contributing factor to the increasing number of Americans who
are overweight.
===This refers to the article about the way food is marketed in
the March 1, 2002 issue of SAVVY-DISCOUNTS.com:
http://www.SAVVY-DISCOUNTS.com/V8-020301.htm

B)...CNN estimates that the average tax refund this year will be
close to $2000. As we said in the last issue, this money should
be invested in an IRA. If you invested this money all during the
year rather than waiting until you get your refund, you will
earn about $35,000 more over thirty years (say from age 35 to
age 65).
===This refers to the article about saving for retirement in the
