#1. FILL YOUR HEATING TANKS WITH FUEL NOW
A combination of forces has kept heating costs very low. But this
may not last. Unseasonably warm weather, fewer planes flying and
over production by the oil producing states has meant substantial
savings for consumers. However, when cold weather sets in and
OPEC and Russia start cutting back their oil deliveries, the
price is bound to go much higher. It can happen very rapidly.
Don't take a chance. You have almost nothing to lose. Fill your
tanks now and avoid the rush when the price finally does go back
up.
Schools, community centers and large apartment buildings should
look into the possibility of locking in these prices for the
entire season and perhaps longer. They should talk to their local
fuel company.

#2. CHEAPER AT CHRISTMAS
Some things are actually cheaper during the season. It's that old
supply and demand dynamic. 7 1/2 watt Christmas tree lights can
cost as little as 10 cents apiece. These are the same lights that
go into night lights (usually white or clear) that many people
use to illuminate their hallways. Yet if you go to a store for a
night light bulb you can pay as much as 70 cents.
The same is true for candles. If you like to burn a candle or two
other times of the year, you will pay a small fortune. Yet at
Christmas, candles are cheap.
So stock up on these two items and buy enough to last you until
this time next year.

#4. DO NOT BUY GIFT CERTIFICATES
We strongly recommend that you NOT buy any gift certificates. All
you are buying is an agreement which states that the gift
recipient will spend your money at a particular store. You are
also locking into a contract so that the store now has control
of your money. Suppose your daughter goes to her favorite shop
with a gift certificate but that vendor has stopped carrying the
line of clothing she likes. What does she do now? What does she
do if the store requires every last penny be spent there? What
happens if the business goes bankrupt or is bought by another
company?
Instead, we recommend that you give your daughter (for example) a
check in a nice Christmas card. State on the card what the money
is for. You can also write this on the check itself. "Please buy
that dress you have always wanted."

#5. DON'T GET SHORT CHANGED WITH CHRISTMAS RETURNS
You will probably find that you need to return a gift or two for
a refund or exchange after Christmas. While this should be a
simple and straightforward process, you might be surprised.
Prices can fall dramatically the day after Dec. 25. A bathrobe or
sweater can sell for half of what it went for a week earlier. The
problem is that you should get a refund for the price that was
actually paid and not the current price. Some stores may try to
get away with only giving you credit for that after Christmas
price.
Insist that the clerk look up the pre-Christmas price, credit you
for that amount and also refund the sales tax.
