Flu, Colds and Anthrax Does hand washing really do any good? With the scare of anthrax in the mail, health officials are telling people to wash their hands after handling letters. Some people think this is like putting a small Band-Aid on a gaping wound but you might be surprised. It turns out that your mom was right. Hand washing is a low cost and simple way to prevent a myriad of contagious illnesses. Wash your hands four or more times a day with plenty of soap and warm water for about 20 seconds and then dry. Antibiotic soap is not necessary and may not even be a good idea, but we'll save that for another article. Take a look at what health experts have to say: The Navy Wire Service - B Wire (NWSB) reported on July 21 1997: "Washing your hands keeps you healthy. Children who washed their hands four or more times during the school day had 24 percent fewer sick days because of colds and flu, and 50 percent fewer sick days because of stomach troubles." In another study the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego found that new recruits at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, IL, who washed their hands at least five times a day had 45 percent fewer illnesses such as a cold, flu or pneumonia than those who didn't wash their hands as much. But the news is not all good. A study for the American Society for Microbiology discovered that only 67 percent of people washed their hands after using the toilet. In some places like New York City it was as low as 50%. If you think that colds and flu are not that serious, you might want to consider this: According to the National Center of Health Statistics, 65 million colds send people to the doctor or knock them out of work or school each year. In addition, 44 million school and workdays are missed annually because of colds and flu, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). In addition about 100,000 people a year are hospitalized due to flu and 20,000 people a year die from flu. Most of those people are over 65 years old. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* THE DOCTORS BOOKS OF HOME REMEDIES are excellent reference books for inexpensive simple, effective, treatments at home for many ailments including tips for colds, flu, depression, and even cats and dogs. Savings Calendar: Count on these savings in November. NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really fresh. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, and that money is probably going to local farmers. ---Fruits and vegetables in season: apples, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cranberries, endive, grapefruit, grapes, lima beans, mushrooms, parsley, rutabagas, winter squash, turnips. ---Get Halloween candy for up to 75% off. Sometimes the only difference between Halloween candy and high priced regular candy is the package. ---Change batteries in your smoke detectors. These batteries may still be good for other uses - just don't risk your life leaving them in the smoke detectors. Reuse old ones in other devices. ---Turkeys are often inexpensive. Buy several and freeze. ---Check all doors, windows for drafts. Install new furnace filters. ---Get antifreeze early; the price always goes up in the winter. ---Tune your car before winter starts. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* FREE! Quiz - can you figure which deal is cheaper? A local coffee shop charges $1.49 for a large cup of coffee. However, if you buy one of their special pottery mugs for $19.95, they'll refill it for 94 cents a cup for the next 12 months. Question: How many cups of coffee will you need to drink with the $20 mug to cover the cost of the mug and start saving money? Just do a rough estimate. Try to do it in your head; it's that simple with a little rounding off of the numbers. Answer: See bottom of this newsletter. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? You can calculate a rough answer in your head by rounding off the numbers. There is about a 50 cent difference in the price of the cups of coffee and you will have to pay about $20 to get that discount. Divide $20 by 50 cents and the approximate answer is that you will have to drink 40 cups of coffee in the next year to cover the cost of the mug and start saving money. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* $8 A MONTH FOR ALL LONG DISTANCE CALLS?
