How to develop life long habits

Many of our basic money saving tips will also work for college and high school students. This advice will help get these young people into the habit of saving money and looking for value. If you "teach your children well" they will save a ton on food, groceries, furniture, CDs and a variety of other goods. And with this kind of help they might have enough for retirement later on!

For example, if a college or graduate student merely gets into the habit of buying store brand groceries, he or she could save hundreds of dollars a year which could be used to pay for college expenses.

The same advice goes for cars. Buying a used vehicle can be a much better deal than a new one because used cars have a repair history and new cars do not. Consumer Reports in their annual Buying Guide issue lists in comprehensive detail the problems or lack of problems with about 100 makes and models over the last eight years or about 800 vehicles. From this wealth of data a student could find an older car with a better than average repair record. Again the savings could be thousands of dollars.

Used furniture, consignment clothing, used CDs are also very good values. And learning how to handle credit cards at an early age is invaluable.
