8.2 SUPERMARKET AND GROCERY STORE COMPLAINTS, RETURNS AND REFUNDS
Returning
items you didn't like should be as much a part of your shopping as bringing a shopping
list. Many people feel embarrassed taking things back; they don't want to make a fuss.
However, well run stores welcome the feedback because they need to know when a product
isn't up to their standards.
I
estimate that each family wastes 1%-3% of their income each year by not returning
products; this averages $300-$900 per year.
In
addition to the stores, you might complain to the maker of the product. You should always
check the package for its address and phone number. Most well-known national brand
manufacturers now have 800 numbers. They appreciate your comments because it warns them of
problems. They will often pay for a replacement without hesitation, by sending you a
coupon.
