2.5 GET INTO THE HABIT OF CHANGING YOUR GROCERY HABITS - SUPERMARKET DISCOUNTS
The
greatest barrier to saving money on groceries could be your family's eating habits. For
example, many people become accustomed to a name brand breakfast cereal, when a store
brand can be just as good. A family with two teenagers who consume four boxes of cereal a
week could save over $400 a year buying store brands. And that's just one of over a
hundred products you buy each month.
It
might take a serious talk with your kids. They need to understand that eating expensive
cereal means that you can't afford the bicycles they want. Make a game of it; let them
calculate the savings of national brands vs. store brands. Get them to try a blind taste
test. Can they really tell the difference? A surprising number of people, for example,
could not tell the difference between instant coffee and fresh in a blind test, nor whole
milk and low-fat milk. Also studies have shown that people soon get used to a slightly
different taste and texture.
