PLASTIC PIPE, WATERDescription: This is usually cream-colored and is available in 10- and 20-foot lengths and in various diameters. Buying information: Plastic pipe for water may be polyethylene (PE), a flexible material available in several densities and often used for lawn-sprinkler pipe; PVC (polyvinyl chloride); and CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride). CPVC can be used for both hot and cold water. Some plumbers dislike CPVC, saying it distorts or "spaghettis" when the water gets too hot. How-to hints: Like plastic DWV, plastic water pipe can be cut and joined with adhesive. It can also be joined to other types of pipes, as mentioned previously, with appropriate fittings called transition fittings. |
