ROOFING NAIL

Description: This has an enlarged head and a smooth shank. It comes in various lengths, 3/4 inch, 1 1/4 inch, 1 1/2 inches (most popular), and 2 inches.

Buying information: A roofing nail is used to secure roofing shingles and felt. The size of the nail used depends on the thickness of the material being driven through.

How-to hints: To grip properly, the nail must be long enough to penetrate the roofing, felt, and deck; when it punches through the back side of the deck, it creates splinters, and it is these splinters that help prevent it from working loose.
