GEM BOX

GEM BOX, electrical hardware

Description: This is a metal box 2 inches wide, 3 inches high, and 2 1/2 inches deep, with or without plaster" ears. "

Buying information: This is the standard box for switches and receptacles. A single gem box (or gang box) has room for one receptacle or switch. If necessary, the sides of gem boxes can be removed and the boxes linked up -- ganged -- to form a larger box, a two- or three-gang box. Gem boxes also come deeper than 2 1/2 inches.

How-to hints: Gem boxes can be used on old or new work. For new work, get the kind without plaster ears -- just nail through holes in the box into the framing member. On old work, plaster ears and Madison clips should do the job. Gem boxes also come with expandable brackets that can take the place of Madison clips.
