3.0 COOKING, FOOD AND HOME PRODUCTS - EXAMPLES OF DO-IT-YOURSELF SAVINGS - DIY
- Make
more recipes from scratch.
- Learn
to cook beans and grains.
Beans
cooked in a slow cooker are easy, healthy, filling and inexpensive. Beans and grains are
good basic dishes that can be livened up easily by adding other ingredients. My wife makes
herself oatmeal with the old fashioned (not instant) oats and saves about $100 a year over
breakfast cereal.
- Make
your own brown bag lunch.
Is
it just a coincidence that some of the richest people in the world, such a Getty, always
brought lunch to work? Make five sandwiches on Sunday and put them in the freezer. Each
workday pull one out and take it with you. The sandwich will keep because it is frozen,
but it will thaw by lunch time, just in time for your meal. In a year's time you will save
a small fortune (anywhere from $1000-$3000).
- Make
you own convenience food such as ready to use mixes that you store in the
frige.
- Make
bread with a bread machine.
If
you have already prepared your own custom mix, this is very easy.
