The one essential book you should own about car repair is the manual for your car. You can get the specific manual or a more general manual that may cover several years including your make and model. Try an auto parts store or a national chain auto parts store like Auto Zone.

This is the grand daddy of all car catalogues. You can get a good over view of available accessories and even find out which parts fit your car. For example, if you see the water pump for your car also listed for model years 1985-1992, you may find that your engine and parts are compatible with those years. This means that at a junk yard you may be able to get a part from any of those models to fit your vehicle.
