1.1 MORE GENERAL TIPS; DISCOUNT CLOTHES AND CLOTHING.== Versatility Look for clothes to match more than just one other item you wear. If a woman can wear the same skirt with several jackets, the odds are she will wear it often. The same general advice goes for a man. == Take it back! I've said it before and I'll say it again: If it's not right, return it to the store and get your money back. Any reason is a good reason. I suggest you simply say, "When I got it home, I found it didn't go with anything else I had." Don't just put that jacket in your closet, thinking you'll wear it "one of these days," only to find it years later with the price tag still on it. == Size Although we tend to think of sizes as standard, they are not. If a dress is too tight, don't assume you've gained weight, just try the next size up. And don't lose any sleep over it. Clothes made by foreign manufacturers and old clothes at consignment shops can vary wildly from standard sizes. Just keep trying. == Buy quality Even tightwads agree that buying quality and paying more can be a good deal. Why? Because you'll get more wear out of the clothes and pay less in the long run. The true cost of a garment is the price divided by the number of times you wear it. == Stock up Some clothes you can even stock up on when they go on sale. You know you'll need them in the future. These include underwear, T-shirts, athletic shoes, sports wear, and blue jeans. == Identify your weaknesses Everyone has a clothing weakness. I had a roommate at college who had 50 perfectly pressed shirts. I know of women who own 60 scarves. If you really wear them all, that's fine; just be careful. == Never buy clothes to make yourself feel better If you are depressed, angry or lonely and you buy clothing to cure what ails you, you are asking for trouble. Retailers know that clothing is often an emotional purchase. Clerks are trained to flatter you, make you feel good, and get you to buy and buy. While you might feel better for an hour or a day, when you get your credit card statement, you will feel much worse. |
