2.0 WHAT IS DANGEROUS? HOW TO PREVENT CRIME, ACCIDENTS, INJURIES
What
should you be afraid of according to crime statistics? A disgruntled employee who goes on
a killing rampage at your place of work, shark infested waters, or a fiery violent plane
crash? The answer is none of the above. In fact none of these is even close.
People
can save a lot of money by protecting themselves against and avoiding the most common
dangers, rather than fearing dangers which are rare. The best defense is good information
that prepares you for likely threats.
For
example, at the beach it is very unusual to be attacked by a shark. Drowning is the real
danger, the one that people should protect themselves against.
Another
serious danger at the beach or any open area is lightning. Lightning often kills at golf
courses, for example. Also during lightning storms you should disconnect the phone
connection to cordless phones, answering machines, and computer modems as well as the
cable on cable TV. I personally know over 10 people who have had devices damaged by
lightning.
