A poor use of your money

Extended warranties are not a good idea or the best use of your money. They are really a form of high priced insurance. You will generally come out better if you pay any repair bills as they come up. Salespeople make lots of money on these as do the stores. You should expect the hard sell.

The extended warranty generally covers repairs after the first year up to about five years. Most products fail in either the first couple of months when they are new and covered by the original warranty or when they get quite old. An extended warranty insures you during a time period when there are the fewest problems.

What the salespeople are really selling is peace of mind. The assumption is that with this warranty you will not have to worry about repairs for quite some time. Don't take the bait. It is rarely a good idea to pay for something in advance. If you do need repair work, you cannot shop around for the best deal; you will have to use the service stated in the extended warranty. In my own experience, the extended warranty service from a major electronics store was not good.

#3. EXTENDED WARRANTY AND BAD REPAIR SERVICE
A true story

I bought a large TV for my father with an extended warranty. I purchased this from a major national electronics retailer. When the TV went on the blink, the in-house authorized repair department took two months to fix it. It seemed that they were not in a hurry because we had already paid for the work. I have to assume that other people who had not paid up-front were treated better.

#4. AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE
With refurbished products, a longer warranty might be okay.

With refurbished, it is especially important to look at the warranty. Try to get the same as for a new one. If not, this is one case where an extended warranty might be good idea. Buy one that will keep your refurbished product under warranty for as long as a new product.

I have bought several refurbished computers and found them to be excellent bargains. You can buy current technology at a discount. If the refurbished item comes with only a 30 or 90 day warranty, however, buying an extended warranty might be justified.
