#1. ASPIRIN: THE WONDER DRUG

A very inexpensive and often well tolerated drug can work wonders in many people and cut their medical costs dramatically. I am talking about aspirin. A new study (see article #3) provides further evidence.

Seniors and many others can have substantial monthly bills for prescription drugs. Low cost aspirin may be just as good. Aspirin has been shown in some cases to work especially well in preventing recurring strokes, reducing bowel cancer, helping with the recovery from coronary bypass surgery, and even treating someone who is experiencing a severe angina or heart attack.

Naturally a patient must consult with his or her doctor to determine if aspirin is the right drug to take, exactly how much to take and how often, and if there are any potential dangers such as side effects or interactions with other drugs.

#2. BENEFITS OF ASPIRIN IN MORE DETAIL

A. Aspirin worked as well as a prescription drug that costs 10 times as much for prevention of recurring strokes in blacks
B. Taking aspirin soon after coronary bypass surgery has been shown to lower the risk of death from possible complications
C. People who suffer from cardiac disease or who are at risk may be helped by a regular small dose of aspirin
D. Taking aspirin immediately can substantially lower the possibility of death in the case of an angina attack or heart attack
E. People with high-blood pressure or diabetes may benefit
F. Aspirin can be effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis
G. Aspirin may cut the risk of bowel cancer up to half
H. A study suggests that aspirin may help prevent breast cancer

#3. NEW STUDY SHOWS COST SAVINGS WITH ASPIRIN

A new study has found that aspirin is as effective as a much more expensive medicine in preventing recurring strokes among blacks. The research conducted by the African American Antiplatelet Stroke Prevention Study found that aspirin cost less than $10 a month instead of more than $100 for the costly ticlopidine (Ticlid) drug.

Aspirin has been around since the fifth century BC when it was used by Hippocrates. Because it has been a medicine for such a long time a lot is known about its benefits and risks. Even so, medical research is still finding new uses and ways to improve its performance. Here are some things you should know if you consider taking aspirin.

Taking aspirin at bed time may provide the most benefits for some patients, a Spanish study found.

Even in small doses it can interfere with blood clotting which can be beneficial for heart patients but not good in other situations.

Some people are allergic to aspirin and should not take it. In addition there could be a combination of medical problems in which aspirin would not be beneficial.

Aspirin should not be taken by children under 16 years because of the possibility of Reye's syndrome which although rare can be fatal.
