#1. DO IT WITH DUCT TAPE

I used duct tape (yes, that's the correct spelling; it's used for ducts) years before anyone knew what it was. I used it so much I was even interviewed by the local newspaper when it became popular a few years later.

Duct tape is one of the great simple, easy, cheap repair products of the modern age. It is excellent for emergency repairs. You should have at least one roll of duct tape in your house and one in each car. It is a combination of strong thick adhesive on cloth with a plastic covering. I like some brands better than others. I have found that the DUCK TAPE brand is easy to find and about the best. Cheaper brands are not as thick. Avoid tapes that do not contain cloth, these are not genuine duct tape!

#2. HOW TO APPLY DUCT TAPE

Duct tape can last a very long time for indoor household repairs, even on areas that get wet as long as you put it on a dry surface to begin with. It will fall apart in sunlight, however, and it will not last long on surfaces that get warm.

When you apply the tape, the surface needs to be clean and dry. If you wrap duct tape all the way around something such as a pipe, a hose or a board, it will be incredibly strong.

Part of the "art" of using duct tape is knowing how to tear it. You are not limited to wide strips. You can tear long thin strips or short tiny pieces. Because it is made of cloth, it will tear evenly and cleanly along the weave. The trick is to tear it quickly with a straight forward motion. Practice and you'll get the hang of it.

#3. EXAMPLES OF USING DUCT TAPE

The uses for duct tape are almost endless but here are some useful examples:

-->An emergency zipper puller: a paper clip inserted in the hole where the puller used to be, then wrapped with a tiny strip of duct tape. This can last for many weeks.

-->The drain hose on our old washing machine got a crimp in it and then started leaking at the crimp. I straightened out the hose and first wrapped it in duct tape. Next I took a thin piece of wood, placed it over the crimped section and wrapped the wood and hose in duct tape again so the hose would not bend at that point any more.

-->Use it on a drain pipe in an emergency. Let the pipe drain. Dry off the surface, then wrap the break or hole with duct tape. If the hole is big, cover the hole with a cut out piece of plastic from a milk bottle and then wrap the pipe and plastic with duct tape.

-->Use it on plastic garbage cans when they crack. Put duct tape on both sides, inside and out. We found that this repair lasted almost indefinitely.

#4. MORE USES FOR DUCT TAPE

In a pinch, fix a tear in clothing by putting duct tape on the inside. If done right, the rip won't be visible. An embarrassing situation can be easily remedied for a few hours. This should only be done in an emergency as the duct tape will not last in the washer and dryer and should be removed. Also be careful if you need to get the clothing dry cleaned; you will need to remove the tape and any adhesive residue. For kid's Halloween costumes, duct tape should be strong enough to last the evening.

#5. DUCT TAPE NOW COMES IN COLORS

You can now buy duct tape in a variety of colors. These seem to come in small rolls and are a bit expensive compared to the original silver tape. I found a good variety at Wal-Mart. A quick, easy, perhaps permanent repair could be virtually invisible, and your friends will never know you simply did it with duct tape.
