TERM: BILLED TELEPHONE COMPANY PHONE CARDS|
EXAMPLES OF SERVICES: Call ATT Calling Card, MCI Calling Cards, Sprint Foncard
DEFINITION: A major long distance company phone card allows a customer to make a call from any phone, to pay an agreed rate and then to be billed for that amount on their monthly long distance bill. You will need to already have a long distance account with that company.
HOW TO CALL: The user calls an 800 number and after connecting to the service dials the number he or she wishes to call.
COST: Typically there is a connection fee (from 80 cents - $1.10 per call) plus a 28 cent - 40 cent per minute charge. A five minute call can cost from $2.20 - $2.50 depending on the company and card used as we found in our survey of such cards.
BILLING/PAYMENT: The charge for the call will show up on the regular monthly long distance bill.
WARNINGS: If you make a call from a payphone and do not follow your card company's instructions, you may find that your calling card was billed but at the rates determined by the owners of the payphone and not your long distance company. See the following note from the FCC, the government agency in charge of overseeing the telecommunications industry.
NOTE: VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE FCC
No matter what type of calling card you use, the only way to be sure that your call will be carried by your chosen long distance company is to follow your long distance company’s dialing instructions for placing calls from public telephones. Using your preferred long distance company’s calling card will not, by itself, guarantee that that company will carry the call.
COMMENTS: Unless you make only one or two calls a year with a phone card there are much less expensive alternatives. A prepaid long distance service lets you call from any phone any time in the USA for as low as 2.9 cents a minute. When calling from a payphone or hotel this is no more complicated than with a billed phone card.
