7.6 WATCH OUT FOR ACCESSORIES AND EXTRAS; UNPLANNED EXPENSES AND PERSONAL FINANCE, THE
MAIN REASON PEOPLE GO INTO DEBT
When
you make a major purchase (and even some minor purchases) you will need to buy additional
accessories. If these accessories are not on your list, then the store may try to sell you
things you don't need or want. Accessories may be important whether you are buying a new
suit of clothes or a boat or camera.
I
suggest that when you plan to buy a major item you also consider the extras as well or you
will be hit with a number of essential unplanned purchases.
Let's
take an example of a computer purchase. Suppose you have $1000 to spend on a computer. How
much should you plan for extras.
As
an experienced computer user, I would suggest another $1000. Why? Software can end up
costing you more than the computer. You may find you want to add more memory. In addition
you may need a special desk or chair or a UPS (an uninterruptible power supply) which is
essential in many parts of the country where the electricity fluctuates.
In
addition there are a lot of little extras you may want: a mouse pad, some instruction
books, CDs, CD holders, a couple of surge suppressors, a power strip, etc.
As
you can see, the list can get very long and very expensive.
