SPRINGS INTRODUCTIONThere are three categories of springs: compression, extension, and torsion. The first two kinds are widely used, while torsion springs are not. Springs come in a vast number of gauges and lengths. Some are hot-dipped galvanized for use outdoors; others are painted with black enamel and are for interior use only. Chrome-plated springs are also sometimes available, and can be used outside. The quickest way to get a replacement spring, since they come in so many sizes, is to bring the existing one into the store and match it up with samples (many dealers have boards displaying a variety of springs). You can also buy assortments of springs, but this is probably for the rare individual. Springs are not used that much in average do-it-yourself projects. Springs are made of tough metal and are difficult to cut and handle. If you want to cut one, nick it with a cold chisel or old pair of pliers at the desired spot. Work it back and forth until it snaps. If you want to open or close a spring, locking pliers work well. |
