DIAPHRAGM-TYPE BALL COCK, TOILET TANK PARTSDescription: This is basically a plastic tube on top of which is a plastic canister that houses a diaphragm mechanism. Buying information: This costs less than a standard ball cock and can be installed in most toilets. It is also quieter (it operates by water pressure) than a standard ball cock. It comes in two models, one of which has an anti-siphon feature, which ensures that waste water will not be siphoned into the water supply system. How-to hints: Sometimes connecting the bottom of this type of ball cock to the top of the water supply tube can be difficult without danger of leaking when the top of the supply tube has a plastic insert. This means that hard plastic -- the top of the supply tube -- is contacting hard plastic, the bottom of the ball cock. To avoid the problem, place the rubber washer supplied by the manufacturer on top of the supply tube. This will ensure a tight seal. A way to save having to put in a new water supply tube when installing the diaphragm-type ballcock is to use the brass nut securing the existing ball cock. In other words, when removing the existing ball cock, loosen the brass nut on the bottom and drop it down along the water supply. Install the diaphragm ball cock and use this nut to secure it in the tank, rather than using the plastic nut supplied by the manufacturer, which, as mentioned, makes it necessary to install a new supply tube. |
