GALVANIZED PIPE, WATERDescription: This is silvery in color, threaded at the ends. Common sizes are 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch. It is normally available in 21foot lengths. Buying information: Galvanized pipe starts out as black iron pipe, and then is dipped in zinc -- galvanized. Galvanized water pipe has the same drawbacks as galvanized DWV -- it scales. When replacing a section of galvanized pipe, many plumbers use copper. How-to hints: Dielectric fittings are available for joining copper to galvanized iron; this prevents an electrolytic corrosion that occurs when copper makes direct contact with galvanized iron. You can cut galvanized pipe easily with a snap cutter, which you can rent. The dealer will show you how to use it. Get a head start on improving your house with
