J-BEND, LAVATORY PARTS

J-bend, plumbing

Description: This is a J-shaped piece of pipe, usually 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches, but occasionally 1 1/4 by 1 1/4 inches.

Buying information: The J-bend is the heart of the trap. It comes with or without a cleanout, which is a threaded metal plug that screws into the bottom of the bend and can be unscrewed for clearing the trap when it gets clogged. The value of a cleanout plug is debatable, although it is certainly useful if you drop something valuable down the drain.

How-to hints: Trap pipes are held together with large nuts and washers, and can be taken apart easily using water-pump pliers. But take care in reassembling them so that you don't strip the threads.
