SOCKET SHELL, LAMP PARTS

PULL-CHAIN SOCKET,
electrical hardware

Description: The socket shell consists of a cylindrical, usually brass or silver-colored device, and an insulating sleeve. Inside is the electrical mechanism.

Buying information: Sockets come with various on/off actions. Some have a pull chain, others a push-pull switch, still others a turn button that can provide three levels of light with the appropriate bulb.

How-to hints: When securing wire to the two terminal screws inside a socket, wrap the bare wire clockwise around the screw shank. This ensures that as you tighten the screw, the wire gets tighter. The hot wire should go to the brass screw, and the neutral wire to the silver screw. For safety, make sure the screws are tight.

To remove a socket from the base, look for the words PRESS HERE on the socket. Use your thumb or a small screwdriver to apply pressure, and the socket will usually come apart easily.
