CORD SETS INTRODUCTION

Wire is, of course, the basic stuff of electrical work, and you can buy it for permanent installation in various lengths and off rolls by the foot. But wire comes in another form, commonly referred to as "cord set," which means cords in specified lengths with plugs, terminals, or bare wire leads ready to be attached and for use on small and large appliances.

Extension cords are also considered cord sets.

SMALL/LARGE APPLIANCE CORD SETS

electrical hardware

Description: These vary, from wires with a female plug on one end that plugs into the device (such as on a waffle iron) and with a male plug on the other, to wires with a heavy-duty three-prong plug on one end and spade lugs on the other.

Buying information: The best way to buy this cord set is to ask for it by specific use: If you need a cord for a toaster or an air conditioner, ask for it. If you have difficulty locating the cord set at a hardware store, try an electrical supply or an appliance repair store.

How-to hints: Installation of a cord set is straightforward and simple. Just make sure the connections you make are tight. Also, you can make your own cord sets using appropriate wire and plugs, but in higher amperages the wire and plugs are available only in black and don't win high marks for appearance.
