OIL-BASE CAULK

NOTE: Before applying any caulk, scrape the joint clean.

Description: This comes in cartridges like other caulk, and may be gray, black, or white. It is a smooth, dense material.

Buying information: It may be used for standard house sealing, but is particularly good for back sealing -- applying a bead of caulking to the edges of cedar shingles that abut window frames. The caulk keeps water and drafts from getting under the shingles. Oil-base caulk is the cheapest you can buy and resists deterioration. Available in gallon containers for professional use.

How-to hints: Oil-based caulk is difficult to clean from tools; you must use thinners. If so, use thinners in a well-ventilated area.
