NOTES FOR NEWBIES
WHERE SHOULD YOU SAVE (STORE) DOWNLOADED FILES?
Here is one of my favorite tips. Before you start downloading any of these files, create a folder on drive C which is simply ! (the exclamation point symbol) or C:\! Because the computer will sort this symbol before numbers and letters, this will always be the very first folder on drive C. This means you can find the folder easily and not forget where you put your files. Then save all your downloaded files into this folder, C;\!
You can even create subfolders under C:\! such as C:\!\textprogram\
WHAT IS A ZIPPED FILE?
A zipped file is a compressed file that takes up much less space. In addition a zipped file may contain a number of files once it is upzipped. Clearly downloading one file is much easier than several, so many software developers do this.
HOW TO INSTALL DOWNLOADED SOFTWARE
If the file you download has the extension .zip then it is a zipped file which must be unzipped into another folder (see instructions below). After the file is unzipped, go to the folder where the unzipped files are stored, click on setup.exe (which is usually the file name for installing a program) and follow the instructions.
If the file you downloaded has the .exe extension, then simply double click on it to install.
HOW TO UNZIP PROGRAMS THAT ARE ZIPPED:
Get the following free program that will unzip downloaded programs.
A free program that will decompress a number of different kinds of files.
(Note: I have not used this version of Aladdin but this company has a good reputation and it should work well IF you follow the instructions.)
