1.2 RESOURCES - DO IT YOURSELF - DIY
There
are thousands of books and resources for the do-it-yourselfer. Ironically, in this
pre-packaged age we live in, there is more information than ever before. Even the methods
of getting that information have expanded dramatically, such as TV and cable programs,
videos, CD-roms, internet sites, and special interest news groups on the internet.
It
would be impossible for me to list all the individual books available, or even all the
different sources who supply various books and other materials. However, to get you
started here are some of the best.
I
asked my friend Larry, who has been in the book business for fifteen years, which books he
liked. At the top of his list was the Reader's Digest series which covers everything from
recipes, to gardening, to decorating, to home repair. Larry also recommended the Ortho
series, the Sunset series, and the Time-Life home repair and maintenance
series.
In
particular he recommended the Reader's Digest New Fix-It-Yourself Manual ($35) which shows
you how repair anything in your home from blenders to dishwashers. The book is subtitled
How to repair, clean, and maintain anything and everything around your home. He figures
you will save the cost of the book with just one repair.
