There is tons of used clothing out there. To take advantage of spectacular prices, you will need a long term game plan. Experienced thrift shoppers know that eventually they often come across exactly the right item. You've got to have faith!

My wife has found the following at thrift stores:

A Pierre Cardin bathrobe..............$2
A silk Japanese kimono................$2
Brooks Brother's button down shirt.......25 cents
Expensive men's jackets...............$3

Keep in mind this pricing rule of thumb:

Yard sale price...........$1
Thrift store price........$2
Consignment store price...$4

Thrift stores and consignment shops even have sales! Ask.

The best thrift stores are in affluent communities. One reader found virtually new brand-name men's jackets, pants, shirts, etc. Since the well-to-do buy lots of clothes, it makes sense that a thrift store in their neighborhood would carry expensive items.

Women's Auxiliaries and Junior League often hold annual sales. These items come from affluent families and the selection may be quite good. Dry cleaners can sell unclaimed clothes for the price of the unpaid bill.

6.0.1 DOES IT BOTHER YOU TO WEAR SOMEONE ELSE'S CLOTHING?

Some people are a little squeamish about wearing another person's old clothes. Clothes are a very personal so we might wonder about the individual who wore them before we bought them. But as children most of wore hand-me-downs and many of us wear old clothes given to us by friends. It is also recycling. And besides it's just smart.
