#1. SAVE TIME AND MONEY - IT'S EASY

It couldn't be simpler. If you want to save money, spend less time at a supermarket.

These stores are cleverly designed to slow you down and distract you. Try to get a gallon of milk and you will have to walk to the back of the store by tempting baked goods, wines and deli food. Go to check out and you will be surrounded by impulse items such as candy and magazines .

Stores are carefully planned to get you to spend more. In several interviews I did this summer, people seemed surprised that supermarkets were deliberately crafted in this manner. Once you start to wander, your money will wander away from you.

But don't just take my word for it. Here is a quote from the respected consumer reporter, Janice Lieberman of Good Morning America.

"It's estimated that every additional minute you're in a supermarket equals an extra dollar spent."

Quoted from: Tricks of the Trade, A Consumer Survival Guide, by Janice Lieberman, 1998, Dell Trade Paperback, $11.95.

#2. CHEAP TRICKS

Take a mini-vacation
- go on an inexpensive day trip

Just getting out of the house for a while and going to a new spot is often all it takes to clean out the cob webs. Make a list of all the interesting free places within fifty miles. Include parks, lakes, rivers, recreation areas, historical sites, museums, walk ways, arboretums, factory tours, amateur sports, botanical gardens, monuments, annual festivals, etc.

Discount Hotel Reservations
Check out the specials!
Such as:
New York from $69
Chicago from $68
San Francisco from $79
Washington DC from $69

If you want more of a get-away, consider going a little further and spending the weekend. Some hotels even have special packages just for couples and families who need a break. Ask! Again make a list of free or low cost places to go.

NOTE: Many museums and parks that charge admission, designate one day a week or month when you can visit for free.

#3. GET TEN FREE TREES IN SEPTEMBER

Join the Arbor Day Foundation for $10 and the organization will send you 10 free trees in time for planting in your area.

You can get ten flowering trees: 2 White Flowering Dogwoods, 2 Goldenraintrees, 2 Flowering Crabapples, 2 Washington Hawthorns, 2 American Redbuds. Or ten Colorado Blue Spruces.

In addition to the trees you will get the full membership benefits of the Arbor Day Foundation. The Foundation states, "Your 10 free trees are guaranteed to grow, or the Foundation will replace them free of charge. Your six to twelve inch trees will come postpaid with easy planting instructions. To be sure that your trees arrive in a strong and healthy condition, we ship bare root stock only when it is dormant in the fall and spring seasons. If the trees are not hardy in your area, similar trees selected to grow in your climate will be provided. Trees are sent according to your local climate and this year's weather."

#4. 5000 GREAT BOOKS FREE

How would you like to have a full library of many of the worlds greatest books for yourself, your family or your child in school?

A company called DAK 2000 is offering free downloads of many masterpieces of world literature or a CD of 5000 titles with the full text for $6.95 that can be bookmarked and the type size adjusted for easy reading.

Here is what DAK says about what it offers: "Now you can search, copy, extract, annotate, print, read and enjoy every word in over 5000 of the world's greatest works of literature, poetry, government and religion."

A library of these 5000 titles would fill up bookcases lining the walls of a large house.

DEBT INTO WEALTH
A comprehensive, sensible plan
to get you out of debt quickly.
Read a description on our site.

I have been buying from DAK for many years and have found their offers to be as advertised so I ordered the CD which came in about 10 days. It worked as advertised.

It contains works of almost 300 authors such as books by Mark Twain including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer and Life on the Mississippi along with most of Shakespeare, Dickens, Plato, Edgar Allen Poe, etc. This virtual library has world literature from ancient times to modern, from Western masterpieces to Asian texts. You can even look for books in certain categories.

It is worth noting that one CD with 5000 titles saves a lot of trees .

#5. SAVINGS CALENDAR FOR OCTOBER

On sale: Many 2002 car models (since the 2003 are on their way), furniture, large appliances , early sales on fall and winter clothing, fishing gear, school supplies, women's coats, clearance on any lingering items from the previous season.

Look for deals on Halloween items after Oct. 31 such as candy , costumes, decorations. Expect drastic discounts.

NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are freshest. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, tastier and that money may be going to area farmers and staying within the local community.

Fruits and vegetables: apples, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, chard, cranberries, escarole, grapes, green peppers, lima beans, parsley, pears, pumpkins, rutabagas, winter squash, tomatoes, turnips.

You've seen this kitchen marvel on TV
selling for as much as $19.99.
NOW, you can get the Chopper Plus for only $9.99
that's a savings of $10.00!

The amazing Chopper Plus will safely chop
vegetables, onions, garlic and more easily and without the mess.
PLUS, its FUN!

#6. WISDOM FROM BEN FRANKLIN

Think that having more money will make you happy and solve all your problems. Think again. Recent studies have shown that no matter how much people have, they always want more. And since the wealthy have a lot, they have a lot more to lose, so they tend to worry.

    From Poor Richards Almanac
    by Ben Franklin:
  • He who multiplies Riches multiplies Cares.
  • He does not possess wealth, it possesses him.
  • If man could have Half his Wishes, he would double his Troubles.
