7.0 SPECIFIC GROCERY STORE AND SUPERMARKET PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS7.0.1 STORE BRAND STAPLES ALWAYS A GOOD BUYStaples and simple ingredients are usually good bets for great savings on the house brand label. Here is a list: baking soda, cooking oils (except olive), cornstarch, dried fruits, extracts & flavorings, herbs, honey, lemon or lime juice, molasses, nonfat powdered milk, orange juice, peanuts, salt, spices, sugar, unbleached flour, vinegar, and walnuts. 7.0.2 WORTHWHILE NAME BRANDSName brand paint, saves you time because it covers better and lasts longer. Name brand film is best because you won't get another chance to take a photograph (especially true for weddings and family gatherings). Considering all the problems with toxic shock, a generic tampon may not be a good buy. Saving a few dollars on oil for you car is not worth the risk of damaging your engine. Cheap light bulbs often cost you more! Why? They put out less light for the same wattage. Always read the lumens rating on the package. 7.0.3 STORE BRANDS WE DIDN'T LIKEWater was added to some of these: catsup, low cost dish washing detergent, canned Mexican beans. Paper towels were not very absorbent, but okay for most things. I finally found a good absorbent towel, but then suddenly it changed to a much thinner towel although it had the same name. It took me three tries to find a non-aspirin pain reliever that worked for me. Even though chemically they were supposed to be the same, two simply did not do the job. The third try was the charm: the K-Mart brand. STORE BRANDS IN DEPTH7.0.4 OTHER GROCERY LOW COST BRANDSThere are often excellent regional brands and less advertised national brands. These low profile national brands can save you oodles, such as Malt-O-Meal cereals, Curad bandages, Ray-O-Vac batteries, Pepsodent toothpaste and Shasta soft drinks. There are also just plain generics, which usually cost the least. Typically they come in colorless boxes with only basic information printed on the package. Don't neglect these in your trials, but make sure you can return them for a refund. |
