Make sure you get all the refund you are due

You will probably find that you need to return a gift or two for a refund or exchange after Christmas. While this should be a simple and straightforward process, you might be surprised.

Prices can fall dramatically the day after Dec. 25. A bathrobe or sweater can sell for half of what it went for a week earlier. The problem is that you should get a refund for the price that was actually paid and not the current price.

And don't assume that you can only exchange a gift; the store might give you all the money paid or a partial refund if you want to buy something less expensive.

With today's "mathematically challenged" workers you may find that you don't get all your money back when you ask for a refund. When you return an item, make sure they give you your tax back as well. Stores have a way of "forgetting" this.

Some people get so interested in reading the comics, they almost forget to open the present. Most people know about after Christmas sales such as savings of 50%-90% on cards, decorations and candies. Keep cards in a box with a small freshener and they will look brand new next year. In addition look for substantial discounts on items that were hot sellers at Christmas time such as winter clothing, cookware, kitchen gadgets, housewares, rugs and toys. You may find these on the closeout shelves.

Check out annual white sales; stock up on linens, sheets and towels.

NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really fresh. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, and that money may be going to local farmers.

Fruits and vegetables: avocados, broccoli, cabbage, celery, collards, endive, grapefruit, kale, oranges, rutabagas, tangerines, winter squash.

There are really twelve days of Christmas, at least in the olden days. You don't have to do everything on Christmas day. We recommend that some money is given to be spent the day after Christmas when seasonal items like bathrobes and slippers often cost 50% less than they did on December 24.
